First Class have a Special Visitor
Local author and artist, Dolores Keaveney paid a surprise visit to the school today. Dolores is a self-published author/illustrator of children's picture books. A relative newcomer to writing books, Dolores wrote her first book in 2009 and to date she has written six children's books and is about to launch her seventh. Today she read two of her books to the lucky children from our first classes. The children were captivated as they listened to her read her first book 'If I were a Bee'. Dolores is a keen bee-keeper and delighted the children when she showed them her bee-keepers coat and hat and gave them honeycomb racks to examine. Dolores then read from her latest book 'The adventures of Jenny, Sylvester and their six little chicks'. She ended her visit by inviting all the children to the launch of her new book next month and encouraged them all to try writing their own book!

FRONT PAGE OF ONE OF TWO BOOKS I AM ABOUT TO SELF PUBLISH. HOPE TO HAVE THEM AROUND END OF APRIL.
THE ADVENTURES OF JENNY, SYLVESTER AND THEIR SIX LITTLE CHICKS

THIS IS A VERY LOVELY EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM A MAN IN THE UK....
HI , Dolores I would just like to say after looking at your website how much you have inspired me so much, I have been working on my own picture books for some time now. I have had some very good feedback from publishers but in the end it's still a no when it comes to a publishing deal so after seeing your work and your comments has helped me and given me confidence to self publish them through a well respected self publishing company (Matador). When I feel like giving up I just nip on the Internet and look at your website, thanks even though you didn't,t know . Terry McManus. Coventry UK

REVIEW BY SURREYBEEKEEPER
This is the second of Dolores’ books that I am reviewing as I enjoyed the first – If I were a Bee – so much. This is another example of a great beekeeping book for children but comes from a slightly different angle; cooking.
I have always believed that Children will be far more likely to enjoy food if they take part in the growing of vegetables and fruit and this remains true here in this book. It really will teach children about honey and its many uses in cooking.
This book looks as fantastic as Dolores’ other books which are illustrated by herself. They are bright and colourful which means they are really attractive to read through. What I really like about this book though is that it is so personal. Dolores dedicates the book to her Grandchildren and promptly names all the recipe’s after them like the delicious sounding Will’s Beelicious Blueberry Pancakes – oh my life, I cannot wait to make these!
It is also lovely to see that Ellie, one of her grandchildren, has actually hand written some of these recipes which are then reproduced in the book. A really nice touch.
Should you like the book, you can purchase it through our store on here for £7 with 10% of all proceeds going towards our two selected beekeeping charities Bees Abroad and Bees for Development who do sterling work for beekeepers in Africa.
HALLOWEEN 2012

NESSA’S REVIEW
A couple of months ago I was very kindly sent some books by Westmeath author Dolores Keaveney. I was already familiar with Dolores's books as we had taken them on loan, on a couple of occasions, from the library. It initially was Fionn who was attracted to the look of the books, as they are so vibrant in colour but also contain the beautiful illustrated paintings which are familiar scenes of hens, bees and gardens. Dolores is one talented lady as she not only writes the stories but also illustrates each book. She currently has written one spiritual book and four children's picture books including her latest book Beelicious -Recipes with Honey, which is a cookbook for children. The beautiful part to this cookbook is the involvement of Dolores's family, especially her young granddaughter Ellie, who helped devise the recipes. Again this book, no different from the others, is beautifully illustrated and as an added bonus, throughout the book there are interesting facts about bees and honey. A few evenings ago Tiarnan and I made Ellie's Flapjacks from Beelicious and they really worked out a treat. This little cookbook has some real gems of recipes and ones that are especially tailored for the younger cooks in the house.
Ellie's Flapjacks 250g / 10oz butter 100g/ 4 oz soft brown sugar 30 mls honey 20mls golden syrup 350g/ 14 oz porridge oats Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180 C/ 350 F/ gas 4. Grease a baking tray. 2. In a medium sized saucepan add all the ingredients, apart from the porridge oats, and slowly melt stirring regularly. 3. Take from the heat and stir in the oats. Turn into the prepared tin and with a wooden spoon press down well. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 -25 minutes. Cool, in the tin, on a wire rack.
August 2012
Took part in the Tinahealy Agricultlural Show on Bank Holiday Monday August 2012 and guess what, I won the cup for the best craft stand in the Craft Village. I was just delighted....

Met some chicks recently who told a great story..........

Wonderful review by Mary Esther Judy, Fallen Star Blog, Childrens Book Buyer, Dubray Bookshop Galway......
Beelicious Recipes With Honey... out now!
Due to be launched this Sunday (22nd April) and out in your favourite bookshops NOW; a great new cookery book for young children by author Dolores Keaveney ( If I Were a Bee and Jenny, the Little Brown Hen) from Mullingar. I was privileged to receive a preview copy and have an early look at Beelicious Recipes With Honey. It's simply delightful in every way, and very useful both to help develop an active interest in healthy eating (and cooking!) in children and in teaching children of all ages about that wonderful, productive and incredibly necessary insect friend; the honeybee. I thoroughly recommend this lovely new cookery book for children... every household should have one! Here's my review:
"There’s no doubt about it. Children love to cook. This beautiful new cookery book is just the thing to introduce cooking into their lives. Colourful and joyful illustrations take the whole family on a journey through the kitchen with simple, clear recipes for scones, pancakes, cakes and smoothies that even the youngest can make and enjoy. All made with honey! This book isn’t only a ‘how-to’, though. It is chocked full of interesting information about one of our worlds’ most valuable creatures; the honey bee. We’ve tried a few of them here at home and I’ve got to tell you, the results are satisfying and delicious!
Easy to make, even easier to eat, bright and happy; Beelicious: Recipes With Honey is more than a welcome addition to your cookery book collection. It’s a book that will generate an active interest in nutrition and environment and will promote family togetherness."
And here's the link for Dolores' own website where you can learn more about Dolores, her artwork, her books.... everything you need to know!

GOT THIS GREAT TESTIMONIAL TODAY
o This is direct from a text i had earlier today from Alanna. "will you please tell dolores that the kids loved Jenny today. they were mo enthusiastic about this book than any other i read in the entire three weeks!! they loved the pictures and wanted to touch the pages. when we were talking about the cover i asked why they thought there was only one name on the book instead of two and they were amazed that she was the author AND illustrator. Were completely bowled over with the idea that my mam actually knew the author. I really want to go back when its on utube and show it to them or at least let the class teacher know and she will show it to them" thought i should share that with you, was a big hit and wait till tomorrow when the bees are introduced. BOOK REVIEW
BRILLIANT BOOK REVIEW FROM
Books
Author/Illustrator: Dolores Keaveney I wanted to point out two very lovely, wonderful picture books by
Irish author, Dolores Keaveney.
If I Were A Bee
Told in a rhythmic and repetitive rhyme, If I Were A Bee takes us on a journey through all the possible activities of a honeybee making its’ way across garden, field and meadow. The text is wonderful, but what really makes this book is the brilliant, lively illustrations which tells the story on their own. Younger children can be seen pouring over the pages again and again, each time noticing something new. If I Were A Bee is clearly a labour of love and a pure joy.
Jenny The Little Brown Hen
Another gift from Dolores Keaveney is the wonderful picture book , Jenny the Little Brown Hen. Jenny lives in the farmyard and she has friends, but no one who is like her. Jenny is lonely until a striking and elegant rooster moves in. And before too long, they have six lively baby chicks to keep them company. Jenny will never be lonely again! The illustrations are rich, contemporary and textural, and perfectly accentuate this story about friendship, loneliness and happiness. This absolute delight of a book has also been translated into the Irish language, ‘Jenny, an Cearc Bheag Dhonn.’
CHILDRENS BOOK FESTIVAL 2011 OCTOBER Just back from Cork libraries had a wonderful time reading to the best group of kids. Thanks to all the teachers and librarians for their hospitality. I really enjoyed my tour.
1st and 2nd Classes visit the City Library for the Children’s Book Festival
1st and 2nd Classes spent an enjoyable hour listening to Dolores Keaveney, author and illustrator, reading from her books. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about bees and the collecting of honey.
Dolores Keaveney reading from her books
Spent two days in Wexford area, Bunclody, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Wexford town reading in libraries. Great two days. Thanks to all the libraries and teachers in Wexford.
Just started my library reading tour and kicked off in Cavan libraries. I had a great two days reading to fantastic children in Bailieborough /Coothill/Cavan libraries. Kids were great.
RECOMMENDED READING LIST BY CHILDRENS BOOK IRELAND
My Irish book Jenny an chearc bheag dhonn.... is now on the CBI recommended reading list for Schools and Libraries for 2011/2012. I am delighted about this.
BOOK LAUNCH BELVEDERE, EARTH ANGELS ARE EVERYWHERE September 2011
Had a fantastic night at book launch. I wish to thank everyone who came and supported me on the night.
Overseas children charity, Plan Ireland is pleased to announce that our nationwide series of photographic exhibitions is coming to Belvedere House, Mullingar on 29th September. As well as the photo exhibition, we will also be hosting the official launch of a new book by local author and Plan Ireland sponsor, Dolores Keaveney.
The exhibition, called “Through a Girl’s Eyes”, comprises images from Plan’s work with children in the developing world and explores issues such as the motivations involved in rural-to-urban migration, the effects of the global economic downturn on developing countries, education as key to poverty elimination, child trafficking, the potential of technology in moving girls out of poverty and much more. The photographs offer us a glimpse at a different world, one filled with peril, but also with opportunity. A world where Plan is centrally positioned to bring about change.
Long-term Plan supporter and Mullingar native, Dolores Keaveney, will be there on the night to launch her new book, entitled “Earth Angels are everywhere, are you one?” The book looks at the small kind acts of everyday life and the thoughtful moments that make a difference. Through it’s wonderful thoughts and quotes, Dolores highlights man’s humanity to man and poses the question, do you make a difference?
A percentage of the proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to Plan Ireland to continue our work overseas. Dolores has been a Plan supporter for over twenty years and it is our pleasure to team up with her for this exciting event.
Got this amazing review from Babbleabout Books. www.babbleabout.co.uk
If I were a bee…. written and illustrated by Dolores Keaveney Follow the journey of a bee as it dances on bright, yellow sunflowers, drinks nectar from smiling, red poppies and buzzes round gardens full of pretty, pink foxgloves. A gentle, rhyming text perfectly accompanies vibrant and colourful illustrations of flowers and meadows, apples and trees. You really sense the delight of the bee on its journey and we are reminded that we must work together with the natural world to protect it for all future inhabitants – including bees! Age 1+
Jenny the little brown hen written and illustrated by Dolores Keaveney This is a simple and very charming story of a little brown hen who lives and potters about each day at the bottom of Sean and Kathleen’s garden. She seems to have everything a little hen could possibly wish for – lots of space to run around in, beautiful flowers and trees to admire, seeds and grass to eat and lots of visitors to chat with – a little robin, a busy bee and Ellie and Greg, two little children who call on her often. But Jenny is lonely. Then, Sylvester the Rooster comes to stay and Jenny’s life changes forever. Age 1+
Dolores Keaveney is an artist/painter who has been inspired to write and illustrate children’s books since becoming a grandmother to her “four beautiful grandchildren”. And with great determination Dolores has self-published her books. If I were a bee… was launched in May 2009 and is well into its second print run already. Jenny the little brown hen soon followed in August 2010 and it too has been very successful which is not surprising given the beauty of Dolores’ paintings. Visit her website to purchase prints and to download a colour-me-in picture from If I were a bee….

READINGS IN LIBRARIES JUNE 2011
Read my books in Gealscoile Coillin, Mullingar, Kinnegad NS, Castlejordan NS St.Brigids, Singland, Limerick. I had a fantastic time in all the schools and the children were just amazing. They were very attentive and courteous and participated by asking lots of questions.
St. Brigids Singland, Limerick made a fantastic effort for my visit. They planted a garden with the same flowers that are in my book if I were a bee... in the shape of a honeycomb. They took me on a tour and it was just wonderful to see the interest they took and they took great delight in pointing out all the flowers and they could name each and every one of them. I was honoured. Testimonial
'Dolores and her bee puppet buzzed around the classroom to the delight of the children, filling their minds with knowledge of insects and flowers in their immediate environment in a meaningful and imaginative way.'
REVIEW FROM DUBLIN ZOO BOOK CLUB MAY 2011
Just 6 children turned up but they were all so interested and they just loved the ‘Little Brown Hen’.. had great fun discussing- i.e. how did the story begin; when did it begin; how did ‘Jenny’ feel and did they think it may a difference when she met Sylvester!
Conor (8) ‘ I loved the story so much I read it more than 10 times). Jill (7) ‘Jenny was happy when she had her own family..it’s nice to have a family’
2 of them particularly talked about the lovely pictures. I was really impressed and they were very articulate. I have a very good feeling about this event and a huge big thank you to you for kicking it off.
If I were a Bee is next book- so just talked about the ‘honey’ bee and the importance of bees and insects and read just a few lines.
Afterwards we talked about other books and what they liked to read/had read. Time flew by so yes indeed a very good morning indeed.

BOOK LAUNCH JENNY THE LITTLE BROWN HEN 12TH AUGUST 2010 ISBN NUMBER 978-0-9562616-1-8
On Thursday evening 12th August Belvedere House Gardens & Park hosted the launch of my second book Jenny the little brown hen. It was a magical launch with such a fantastic turnout. I am blessed to have so many friends and people who came along on the night to support me and I wish to thank everyone who did so. Without you this book cannot be a success. There were lots and lots of children at the launch and they enjoyed the colouring, face painting and the goodies. This book is self published, as was If I were a bee... so I am doing the distribution myself. It is hard work but very rewarding. I am working on getting a distributor but it is difficult to do this with a self published book.
WORK IN PROGRESS
My new book Jenny the little brown hen will be launched in Belvedere House & Gardens, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on Thursday August 12th at 6.30. p.m. All are welcome especially the kids. I hope to have face painting and colouring, lots of goodies to eat. My friend Gina will read the new book and I will have it for sale there on the night. Its price is 9.99 euro and I will sign all copies. I will also have posters from the pages of the book for sale. These will cost 10 euro each and are a fantastic addition to the book. I look forward to seeing you there.
I am working hard at the moment getting together my new book Jenny the Little Brown Hen.......with the help of my good friend and neighbour Lucy Tormey whose help is invaluable. It is looking very good and I am very excited about this little book. I hope to launch this book in August 2010. So keep an eye out for date.

CHILDRENS BOOK FESTIVAL WEEK OCTOBER 2009 READINGS IN KILKENNY, WATERFORD, WEXFORD
I have just come back from reading my book in libraries in Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Mullingar. I read to 12 different classes of children. I had a fantastic time. The children all enjoyed my readings. I got great feedback from libraries and teachers and have been asked back. I brought a miniature beehive, sunflowers, foxgloves, beekeepers suit and I spoke to the children about the flowers and the bee and how important the bee is to everyone. The children were fantastic and asked lots of interesting questions. My thanks to Niamh Baldwin for her help.
FEEDBACK & COMMENTS FROM READINGS:
"Thanks very much for coming. All the feedback from the schools has been very positive. They all enjoyed themselves thoroughly and the sessions were a great success.
Hopefully we will see you again soon and if our budget permits we will definitely be booking you again for next year!"
Niamh Baldwin - Waterford Library
"I would just like to extend our thanks to you for your participation in our festival this year. Your involvement was greatly valued and contributed hugely to the success of the festival and most importantly the children’s enjoyment of the festival.
The children left with a sense of excitement about reading, writing and illustrating, brought alive for them by the authors and illustrators who visited our libraries. I hope you enjoyed your tour of Wexford as much as the children enjoyed your visit.
Looking forward to working with you again in the future."
Sinead O'Gorman - Executive Librarian WEXFORD
TALK TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS OF ST JOHN OF GOOD SCHOOL WATERFORD 2009
I also spoke to parents of St. John of Gods primary school regarding how I made the book and how to encourage their children to read.
"It was a pleasure to welcome you to St. John of God School. We enjoyed your talk and got great feed back the following day. I had enquiries about your book too and told people where they could purchase it. It's a wonderful book and the story of how it came to be is fascinating. Best wishes for the future and I'll keep an eye out for "Jenny the little brown hen"!"
Kind regards - Jean
